About this event

The ISPSO INTEGRATION group Exploring Racism and Anti-Racism will hold its next meeting on the 3rd of April 2023.

The session in January was all about the question on how to continue. What do members want to explore further? The core group chose to start with two topics that were offered to us by members of ISPSO and that we find important, the first will be a discussion about racism in India.

On 3 April (see times below) we will talk about racism in India, following the desire of many to learn more about racism in different parts of the world. Manab Bose, who has previously worked on the topic, will give us an introduction and share some of his ideas. This will give us a base for further reflection.

The core group, consisting of white members only, feels the need to make a remark on the choice of this topic: looking at racism worldwide is not meant as a distraction from the (un)conscious feelings and ideas of white supremacy that are still so damaging. It is a sign of our desire to look and learn broader while at the same time taking responsibility for and working with our own racism.

Please feel free to share any ideas or reflections beforehand with us by email or directly on the listserv.

This is a free, ISPSO members-only event, all members welcome.

Our next session on 7 June will focus on the remarkable work undertaken by the American Psychoanalytic Association through the Holmes Commission on Racial Equality. Its mission was "to investigate systemic racism and its underlying determinants, and to offer remedies for all aspects of identified racism in the field of psychoanalysis”. Wally Fletcher, present during our previous group meeting, who kindly informed us about this study and its outcome, will present the main elements of this deep investigation that was only published in early 2023. We will then open the debate for discussion.

We are looking forward to welcoming you to these events.
